BEGINNINGS

American artist Mark Brown concentrated on printmaking and filmmaking at the
University of Kentucky. He painted at night in the Reynolds Building, a converted
tobacco warehouse that contained artist’s studios. Seven years after graduation,
while working days as a photographer Brown resumed painting at night. He exhibited
paintings at the UK Art Museum and soloed at Gallery 316 in Lexington, KY. A year
later he was one of four students admitted to the Master of Fine Arts program at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The art reproduced in BEGINNINGS was made in the early 1980’s, during which
time Brown’s abstract paintings and drawings were featured in exhibitions at the
North Carolina Museum of Art, the Ackland Art Museum, the Southeastern Center for
Contemporary Art and the Gilliam & Peden Gallery, among other venues. He paints
full-time in an architect-designed studio behind his home in the woods of
Orange County, NC.
