Mark Brown Painter Statement: Artist History Modern Geometrical Art
Mark Brown and Winterreise 31

At the age of five I drew a crayon portrait of my teacher on a paper towel while the other children were at recess. The teacher called my mother and told her I had 'exceptional talent.' It would be ten more years before I was to be exposed to formal art instruction, yet my mission in life was clear.

My primary modes of expression are oil paintings and painted paper collages. Though not an adherent of Minimalism or geometric abstraction, I synthesize elements of those aesthetic strategies to produce a unique and authentic vision. When beginning a painting or collage, I work intuitively and spontaneously, often feverishly, using a thematic foundation of strong vertical forms. Purpose and chance are equally encouraged. I become more deliberate in my decisions as the direction of the painting or collage reveals itself to me. My touchstone is the emotional resonance of a sense of place in our collective unconscious, whether the angular architecture of a city or soft winter light behind leafless trees. Rooted in introspection, my work is informed not by nature observed but by the nature of memory.

I am compelled and committed to reveal the underlying rhythms of existence by arrangements of color and form.
